La moneda de intercambio musical en las calles de Jamaica, el mixtape. Salen dos mangos con cincuenta y tienen todos los temas mas calientes del momento en ganchados por riddim y con los clasicos sonidos del dancehall creados por King Tubby alla lejos y hace tiempo. Hoy les traigo un lindo mix de cultura 'garrison' (el estilo mas romántico de los 'riddims') del verano del año pasado. DJ Kenny es uno de los DJ's mas conocidos por sus excelentes mixtapes con todos los mejorcitos temas del momento. Por aqui baja el porque de todo esto.

Musical currency in the streets of Jamaica, the mixtape. They're dirt cheap and have all the hottest hits of the day, all beautifully mixed with dancehall SFX, those infamous samples created by King Tubby long ago. Today I bring you a great mixtape of garrison culture (the romantic side of riddims) from last year's summer. DJ Kenny is the most famous DJ from said mixtapes. Here's the reason why.

Claro que sí, como no podía ser de otra manera...el indispensable post de navidad para toda la gente del palo, este vecino les regala una perla (y un disco bastante inconseguible hasta recientes años digitales e interneticos) del 78: Jacob Miller y sus navidades rastafarianas. Quemense todo menos el arbolito de navidad.

Barrilete

Siempre fui un amante de los ritmos jamaiquinos, husmeando los discos de mi viejo cuando era un purrete nomas y topandome con sus copias de Jimmy Cliff, The Israelites y, ah si, un tal señor Bob Marley. En aquel entonces Argentina tenia una escena reggae bastante pequeña, pero había mucho interés y amor por este género. Me acuerdo colgarme de mi hermana mayor solo para ir a la casa de su mejor amiga en aquel entonces porque yo sabia que tenia un tocadiscos y una copia de King Kong de Los Pericos. Y esto era antes de empezar segundo grado del primario! No podía despegarme de ese divertido sonido fusión de Los Pericos.
A pesar que mi gusto luego se baso en mayoria de sonidos Americanos, Británicos y Jamaiquinos, estaba bastante interesado en la pequeña escena local del ska en Buenos Aires, cuando bandas de culto como Bad Manners venían a Argentina a tocar y skinheads se agarraban a las piñas con punks afuera de cada show. Dios, como pasa el tiempo! Me acuerdo también de hacerle el aguante a un par de bandas locales pequeñas en aquel entonces como Butumbaba y Satelite Kingston (cuyo trombonista hoy esta relacionado con cierta banda de ondas vagas).
En fin, a lo que iba...uno tiene que mostrar respeto cuando corresponde. Y mas allá que sean populares y de sonido masivo (por lo cual la gente puede hablar tanto a favor como en contra), Los Cafres vienen puliendo su sonido hace ya casi mas de 20 años. Y yo creo que han estado haciendo un muy buen laburo ultimamente. Mi destacado de su carrera post-2000 es Barrilete. Con influencias jazz, dulces riffs de vientos, y letras romanticas. Siempre me ponen de buen humor. Disfruten, gentes!

I've always been a lover of Jamaican rhythms, digging through my dad's records when I was a little nugget found his Jimmy Cliff, The Israelites and oh yeah, a guy named Bob Marley. Argentina had a small reggae scene, but there was plenty of love for this genre. I remember tagging along my older sister to go to her friend's house just because they had a turntable and a copy of King Kong by Los Pericos. And this was before I started the second grade in elementary! Couldn't get enough of their fusion sound.
Although my taste was mainly focused on UK, US and Jamaican sounds I was pretty interested in the small local ska scene back in Buenos Aires, when cult bands like Bad Manners would come to Argentina to play and skinheads would fight punks outside shows.
God, has time passed by! I remember showing support to small time bands like Butumbaba and Satelite Kingston (whose trombone player is now linked to big time Onda Vaga).
Anywho, my point today is one must pay respect where respect is due. And although they're mainstream and people could argue for and against these guys, Los Cafres have been polishing their roots reggae sound for about 20 years now. And I think they've done a bang up job as of recently. My highlight of their post-2000 career is Barrilete. There's jazzy influences, sweet horn riffs, and romantic lyrics. Always puts a smile on my face. Enjoy!

Reggae resonante

De esto se trata lo que hace el buen muchacho mejicanote Lengualerta. Prometedor artista de reggae que mezcla elementos de hip-hop, dancehall, world music y otras cosillas para darle un sabor unido a su sonido. Lo descubri atraves de otro artista cuyo nombre incorpora una parte del cuerpo y un adjetivo en una sola palabra: Bocafloja (al que ya me remitire en otro momento, ya que me gusta y mucho). Disfruten este disco del 2010.

This is what the nice Mexican fellow Lengualerta is all about. Promising reggae artist that mixes elements from hip-hop, dancehall, world music and a few other things to give his sound a unique flava. I've found out about his through another artist whose name also mixes a body part with an adjective: Bocafloja (whose record I will be talking about since I also like it very much). Enjoy this record from 2010.

classic reggae and 90's jungle mix

En la mas maravillosa disqueria de Kyoto con la compra de un CD de reggae me dieron un mixtape grabado en un casete (!) de 70 minutos. Sin saber si lo podria escuchar o no, me sorprendí al encontrar que el sudodicho era este increíble de riddims clásicos y nuevas versiones remixadas en vivo con lo que parece ser todos vinilos. Una joyita del Nipon de las manos de los músicos de New Generation Impact! Aqui les va el lado A. Disfruten! (y avisen si quieren el Lado B)

At the most amazing record store of Kyoto I got a free mixtape recorded on an actual cassette tape (!) for buying a reggae CD. Without thinking much of it I finally got to play it to be pleasantly surprised by this incredible mix of classic riddims and new versions mixed live on what seems to be an all-vinyl mix. A pearl from Japan by the good folks from New Generation Impact! Here goes Side A (and let me know if you'd like to hear Side B). Enjoy!

Natty Vibes

The CD that started my summer-long obsession with Hawaiian reggae (or Jawaian if you will) back in 2003. That summer I got to live for almost 2 months with my friend Dan and Kurt in their lovely Lahaina house. I'll never forget my first time in the islands and, like every good memory it was accompanied by proper music. This is Natural Vibrations' sophomore release and probably some of their best stuff (IMHO).

El CD que comenzó mi obsesión veraniega con el reggae Hawaiiano (o Reggae Jawaiano si prefieren) alla por 2003. Ese verano tuve el placer de vivir por 2 meses con mis amigos Dan y Kurt en su hermosa casona en Lahaina. Nunca me olvidaré de mi primera visita a las islas hawaiianas, y como toda buena memoria fue acompañada de musica apropiada. Este fue el segundo lanzamiento de la banda Natural Vibrations y probablemente el mejor disco hasta ahora.

Mas disquillos de verano. Esta vez del pais del sol naciente, Bagdad Cafe The Trench Town son de Osaka donde estuve visitando al año pasado y encontre por casualidad esta banda liderada por una chica con voz muy llena de soul y calor. El CD se llama Satisfaction y produce exactamente eso. Aplique calor, vacaciones y disfrutar.

This time from the country of the rising sun, Bagdad Cafe The Trench Town are from Osaka, where I was visiting last year and found by chance this band leaded by a chick with a soulful voice that's pure fire.
